Asan Medical Center Laboratory Information System(II)

Abstract
Laboratory information system(LIS) for the management of laboratory data is a key tool in clinical pathology. However only a few of hospitals in Korea are using LIS due to high cost and technical difficulties of implementing the information
system.
Our
department has developed an information system for routine chemistry using a down-sized computer system. We have used an IBM 486 compatible PC with 8 MB main memory, 200 MB hard drive, 5 RS-232C port and a 24-pin dot matrix printer. The operating
system
and database management system were SCO UNIX and SCO foxbase, respectively. For program development, we used Xbase language provided by SCO foxbase. The C language was used for interface purposes. To make the system user-friendly, pull-down menu
was
used. The system interfaced with our hospital's mainframe computer for on-line input of patient and request detalis and with Hitachi 736/40 chemistry autoanalyzer for bidirectional data exchange. The delta check and panic check were used to
increase the
reliability of laboratory results. The author suggests that this system based on down-sized computer could provide a progressive approach to total LIS based on local area network, and the implemented system could serve as a model for other
hospital's
LIS.
